RF15-116 Micro Stutters after v0.2.1-rc1 update

Original game client RF Online 1.5 v0.2.0 high · filed by Dokazin
Closed

After the recent RC1 update (GameServer · v0.2.1-rc1), the game is now experiencing microstutters, as if there’s some kind of bottleneck. This wasn’t happening on v0.2.0.

It doesn’t only happen in the HQ base either. The microstutters occur anywhere in the game, but only when moving or moving the camera. Without a frametime graph, it is hard to properly showcase this issue.

Reported on version 0.2.0

Reported: Since the 0.2.1 release candidate, the game micro-stutters anywhere in the world while moving or turning the camera. It did not happen on 0.2.0.

Found: Nothing the server does while you walk changed between 0.2.0 and the release candidate, and turning the camera sends nothing to the server at all. So the stutter is most likely the game client reacting to something new the server now sends, or the server competing with the game for your PC's resources. Two things changed that could do either:

  • Grades. The server now sends your real grade points and grade marks at login, to nearby players, and after every kill. 0.2.0 sent zeros.
  • After every kill, the server saves your hunting points to its database straight away. 0.2.0 had no hunting points to save.

Needed: These tests tell the two apart:

  • Does the server run on the same PC as the game? If it does, open Task Manager while it stutters and note the CPU and disk use of gameserver.exe.
  • Make a new character, and before killing anything, walk and turn the camera outside the HQ. Does it stutter?
  • On your current character, does the stutter come only during or right after fighting, or also when you have not fought for a while?
  • Put the 0.2.0 gameserver.exe in place of the release candidate's, keeping the same game, data and character, and log in again. Does it still stutter?

  • The server runs on the same PC as the game. Neither the CPU, disk, nor memory usage of the gameserver fluctuates when the stuttering occurs.
  • Yes, it still stutters with a new character.
  • It happens whether you’re fighting or just moving around. The action doesn’t seem to matter.
  • No, this started after the 0.2.1 release. We not only added the points system but also the new NPCs in HQ, so those could potentially be the culprit as well.

Reported: The server's CPU, disk and memory stay flat during the stutter. It happens on a new character too, fighting or not.

Found: That rules out the server competing for your PC and anything tied to fighting or grade points. The release candidate changed nothing on the client side (the launcher differs only in its version number), so the server is still the first suspect, but the 0.2.0 comparison did not run.

Needed: That comparison, which settles whether the server causes it:

  • Unpack the 0.2.0 bundle into its own folder, separate from the release candidate, and start its server with its own new database.
  • Make a new character there, then walk and turn the camera outside the HQ for a minute.
  • Tell us whether it stutters, and whether 0.2.1-rc2 still stutters in the same test.

I tested it with GameServer · v0.2.0, and I can still feel the stuttering. In this case, we’ll probably have to wait for more people to test it and see if they’re experiencing the same issue.

I can’t pinpoint exactly when it started, only that I’ve noticed it recently.

Really odd for sure. I did test it myself just to see, and I am not getting stuttering on my end. We'll wait and see if other people come in with feedback, and we'll leave it as Response Required for now so it stands out.

Reported: Micro-stutters while moving or turning the camera.

Found: The stutter also happens on 0.2.0, the server's CPU, disk and memory stay flat while it happens, and it has not been reproduced elsewhere. Closing as a one-off. Please file a new report if it returns on the current version.
