Old School Ops

RF455-117 When a monster kills a player, the death screen names the killer as "<garbage>(Trap)" instead of the monster.

Game server RF Online: Dragonborn v0.4.0 normal · filed by willymarj
New

Summary

When a monster kills a player, the client's death screen shows the killer as <garbage>(Trap) instead of the monster's name. The garbage differs on every death, which looks like an unset or misread name field, and the "(Trap)" suffix means the client was told the killer is a trap.

Environment

  • Server: RF Online: Dragonborn v0.4.0 (latest on the release channel), Windows x64, SQLite, GAMEDATA_MODE default.
  • Client: RF_Online.bin Taiwan 2025-07-16 (SHA-256 46528aac…bc558), expiry patched; English locale files.

Steps

  1. Let a monster kill your character, e.g. Dagan (0B107, monstercharacter row 521) on map 13, or Caliana Crew (0560B, row 322) on map 10.
  2. Look at the "You died." screen.

Result

  • Second line reads •Ju'¹ T(Trap) on one death and †×(Trap) on another (different bytes each time).
  • Server log at the same moment: monster killed a player {"monster": "0B107", "monster_serial": 1008252, "monster_level": 66, "map_idx": 13, "victim": 3000} then player died.

Expected

The monster's name, e.g. "Dagan" (no "(Trap)").

Notes

  • Both the server's monstercharacter.m_strName and the client's NDCharacter name for these rows are plain ASCII English, so this is not a text encoding problem in the data
