The start screen is what Studio shows until a client or world is open. It has three buttons and two lists.
Opening something
- New world…: choose an empty folder, and Studio makes an MMO World in it with one blank map and opens that map. Choose a folder that already holds files and the world goes in a new New World folder inside it. See MMO Worlds.
- Open…: choose a world folder (the one holding
world.json) or the folder your game is installed in, the one that holds the game's.exe. You can also drag either onto the window. - Open project…: reopen a project you saved, together with the client it was made for. See Projects and Install.
The same three are in the File menu once something is open.
Recent lists
Recent worlds and clients and Recent projects open with one click. Each row shows the game, the folder and when you last opened it. The × on a row removes it from the list and nothing else.
Which game is this?
Studio works out which game and which version a folder holds:
- An exact match opens straight away.
- A close match, from a client build we have not measured, asks first. It shows its best guess and the reasons for it, and a list to pick a different version of the same game. Pick the version you know the client to be if the guess is wrong, then choose Open.
Indexing takes a few seconds the first time. Opening a client changes nothing in it: nothing is written to the client or to a server until you choose Install.
What opens
Once a client or world is open, the start screen gives way to the workbench. The Maps panel on the left lists the maps, and Models lists every character, creature and item. Nothing is open in the middle yet: pick a map or a model to open it as a tab.
File > Close client goes back to the start screen, saving the open map first.
The footer
The bottom of the start screen shows the version you are running and whether an update is waiting, with Check for updates and the Check at start-up switch. See Installing and updating.
