Three ways to be told something happened. All of them are per event and all of them can be turned off, at Account, then Notifications.

The Bell
Every notification lands here whether or not you asked for the other two. Opening the list does not mark anything read, deliberately: reading the list is how you decide what to open.
Off by default for almost everything, because an inbox is your attention rather than ours. The two exceptions are the summaries below, which exist only as email.
Some messages cannot be switched off: confirming your address, resetting your password, and a moderator explaining why something of yours was removed.
The Weekly Summary
One message a week, and only when there is something in it. A week where nothing happened sends nothing.
There is also an occasional note if you have not visited for a long while. At most once every few months, and never while you are active.
On a Device
A notification on your phone or desktop with the site closed. Turn it on at Account, then Notifications, and allow it when the browser asks.
Per device and per browser: turning it on on a phone does not turn it on on a laptop. Both are listed on that page and either can be removed.
If the browser has already blocked notifications for the site, we cannot ask again - that is a setting in the browser and has to be changed there first.
Watching a Game
Every game page has a Watch button. It sends one message when that game gets a release, and nothing else. It is the only thing on the site that will tell you something without you visiting.
