The recolour tool changes a texture's colours without a paint program, and saves the result in the texture's own format, so the game reads it exactly like the original.
Opening a texture
- Tools > Recolor the model's textures… opens the open model's first texture.
- On a texture's tab, Other textures of the model lists the rest; click one to open it.
- Open texture in the Packs panel opens any picture in an archive.
Each texture opens as a tab of its own, so you can have several open at once. It always starts from the client's own copy.
The texture view
The toolbar shows the file's name and its format, for example DXT1 at 512 Ă— 512 with 10 mip levels, and on RF Online that the header is locked the way the game expects.
- Before and After switch between the original and your edit.
- Fit fits the picture to the view.
- The mouse wheel zooms at the pointer, and right-drag or middle-drag pans.
- The checkerboard behind the picture shows its transparent parts.
Adjusting colours
Under Adjust in the inspector:
- Hue shift turns every colour around the colour wheel.
- Saturation, Brightness and Contrast go from none to double.
- Only where alpha > 0 leaves fully transparent pixels alone.
The picture updates a moment after you move a slider.
Replacing one colour
Under Replace a colour:
- Switch on Replace.
- Choose Pick from picture and click the colour you want to change.
- Pick the colour it becomes under To.
- Set Tolerance: how close a colour must be to the one you picked to change with it.
Colours near the edge of the tolerance change only partly, so the edges of a pattern stay soft.
Saving
Save into project (Ctrl + S) writes the texture into the project's client files at its own path, in the same format, size and number of mip levels as the original. The open model rebuilds with it at once, and Install copies it into the game.
- Reset the sliders puts every control back without touching what you saved.
- Revert to the client's own deletes the project's copy, so the client's original is used again.
The tab name gets a dot while there are unsaved changes, and Studio asks before closing with one unsaved.
Formats
| file | saved as |
|---|---|
| DDS (DXT1, DXT3, DXT5, BGRA8, RGB565) | the same DDS format |
RF Online .rft | DDS with RF's locked header, as the game expects |
| TGA | TGA |
| PNG, JPEG, BMP | the same format |
A DDS in another format opens and can be adjusted, but Studio refuses to save it rather than change its format.
