Editing in Blender

Sending a model or one of its animations from GoMMO Studio to Blender, having every save come back into the project, and the optional GoMMO Studio add-on for Blender.

Edit in Blender opens the model in front in Blender and watches it. Every time you save in Blender, Studio writes the change into the project and the model reloads with it. Edit clip in Blender does the same for one animation.

Edit in Blender works on RF Online and Gate to Heavens models with a skeleton. A World of Kung Fu model is refused, because Studio cannot write World of Kung Fu meshes. Edit clip in Blender works on every model that can import an animation, World of Kung Fu characters included. Either needs a project open, because Studio keeps the Blender files in it.

Choosing Blender

The Edit in Blender section is on the model's Files tab. Studio looks for Blender on the PC the first time the section shows, and lists every version it finds, newest first.

  • Pick the version from the list, or choose Choose blender.exe… to point Studio at one it did not find. Studio remembers the choice.
  • With no Blender found, the section offers Get Blender, which opens blender.org, and Choose blender.exe….

Editing a model

  1. Open the model and go to the Files tab.
  2. Choose Edit in Blender. Blender opens with the model in it: every part as a mesh of its own, bound to the model's skeleton, with its textures.
  3. Change the meshes, and save with Ctrl + S.

Each save comes back into Studio. Studio checks the edit first, then writes the parts that changed into the project's client files, reloads the model, and shows Updated from Blender with the number of files written. Install puts them in the game; see Projects and Install.

While the link is open, the section shows Linked to Blender, the file it is watching and the time of the last update. Stop ends it. Closing the model, opening another in its tab, or closing Studio ends it too; reloading the same model keeps it.

What comes back

  • Mesh changes to any part: moved, added or removed vertices and faces, new UVs, and changed skin weights.
  • Textures: a material whose picture you changed is written over that part's texture, in the game's own format. A material you left alone keeps the part's own texture.
  • Gate to Heavens: a part draws with one texture, the first textured material on it.

Keep each part's mesh name as Studio wrote it. Studio matches meshes to parts by that name, and a mesh it cannot match is refused, with its name in the message. To add geometry to a part, join it into that part's mesh in Blender, or use Add a part on the Edit tab.

When a save is refused

Nothing is written. A toast gives the reason, the section shows it under Last send refused, and Studio keeps watching, so the next save that passes the check is applied.

Your Blender work file

Blender saves a work file (.blend) beside the model the first time. When you choose Edit in Blender again for the same model, Blender reopens that work file, so your scene, your extra objects and your Blender settings are where you left them.

Editing an animation

On the model's Animation tab, under Edit clip in Blender:

  1. Play the clip you want to change, with any edits you have made to it on the timeline.
  2. Choose Edit clip in Blender. Blender opens the model with only that clip on it.
  3. Change the animation and save.

Each save is written over that clip in the project, the same way an imported animation is, and the toast names the clip. Changes to the meshes in this file are ignored; use Edit in Blender on the Files tab for those.

The GoMMO Studio add-on

Edit in Blender works without it. The add-on adds a GoMMO tab to Blender's sidebar, so you can pull a model from Studio from inside Blender and send it back by hand.

  1. On the Files tab, choose Install Blender add-on. Studio copies it into the chosen Blender version. The line above the button says whether that version has it installed, has an older copy, or has none; once installed, the button reads Reinstall Blender add-on.
  2. In Blender, open Edit > Preferences > Add-ons, find GoMMO Studio and switch it on. This is needed once.
  3. In the 3D view, press N and open the GoMMO tab.

The add-on needs Blender 3.6 or later, and Studio must be open.

Where the files are

Everything Studio sends to Blender is in the project's edit\blender folder: the model as a .glb, your .blend work file beside it, and a clip sent from the Animation tab under the model's name with the clip's name added. Nothing in that folder goes into the game; only what Studio writes into the project's client files does.

Limits

  • Edit in Blender refuses World of Kung Fu models, and any model that is not skinned on a skeleton.
  • An animation edited this way has the same limits as one imported from a file; see Importing animations.
